Standard for Sanitation

Trailer Facilities with Nonsewered Waste Disposal Systems
Minimum Requirements

Abstract of Project

The role of the PSAI Board of Directors is to provide strategic direction for the organization, supply oversight for the PSAI’s image and brand and ensure that financial controls are in place to ensure the long-term viability of the association.

PSAI Board members are volunteers who are committed to being an integral part of the organization’s leadership, direction and future. They show a level of dedication to the industry that goes above and  beyond what is usual in a volunteer role.

Board members may be either portable restroom operators or suppliers whose companies are current  members of the PSAI. They are nominated and elected by their peers to three-year terms in accordance  with the bylaws of the PSAI. Officers are elected to serve one-year terms in their officer role.

Project Need

Portable sanitation trailers with nonsewered waste disposal systems are widely used in workplaces, public spaces, and emergency settings, yet there is currently no standard that applies specifically to them. In the absence of appropriate guidance, operators and manufacturers are often required to follow codes meant for unrelated systems–such as RVs, mobile office trailers, or permanent plumbing–which can be impractical, incompatible, or impossible to meet. This gap creates inconsistent enforcement, unclear expectations, and avoidable health, safety, and environmental risks. A dedicated standard is needed to establish clear, relevant minimum requirements for these trailer-based sanitation systems, support more consistent regulation, and provide a reliable benchmark for manufacturers, service providers, and authorities having jurisdiction.

PSAI invites you to share your comments as we begin the development of this standard. Public comments should be sent via email to veronicac@psai.org or mailed to PSAI’s address with ATTN: Veronica Crosier
