The Portable Sanitation Association International (PSAI) is recognized internationally as a credible, authoritative voice that provides education and information for both workers and customers of the portable sanitation industry. Our History

The PSAI was formed in the United States in the early 1970s to serve the common interests of the growing portable sanitation industry and standardize services and communication. By the early 1990s, after many years of invention, innovation and perfection, portable restrooms were more commonplace than ever and the marketplace began introducing new offerings such as flushing units, restroom trailers, VIP units and portable water systems.

Today, portable sanitation is recognized as an integral part of society in many parts of the world.
Construction sites, parks, residential home building and special event venues all are expected, and now legislated, to have portable restrooms. The PSAI’s growth has been steady and strong and includes international membership spanning six continents.

Our Accomplishments

We at the PSAI are proud of the positive impact our organization has made on the portable sanitation industry throughout our history and continuing today. Our list of accomplishments includes:

  • More than 400 member companies across the globe, including at least five continents
  • Development and continued maintenance of 2 American National Standards specific to portable sanitation
  • Thousands of service technicians who have become certified professionals through the PSAI Certification Program
  • Hundreds of operators and technicians who have participated in one or more PSAI training courses since the program began in 2019
  • $457,500 fundraised and awarded since 1993 through the PSAI Scholarship Fund for post-secondary education, now open to U.S. and international colleges, universities, and qualified trade schools
  • Donations to a variety of charitable organizations and fundraising campaigns
  • Host of the world’s largest portable restroom trade show for 50+ years, most recently attracting more than 700 attendees
